When using self-storage it is often difficult to decide what size storage room you will need for your things. It’s an important decision to get right, as the more space you take the more it’s going to cost you.

There is no ‘hard and fast’ rule to follow – it depends on how much stuff you want to put into storage which will determine what size storage room you end up using.

We do have some tools on our website which we hope will help you make the right choice for you and your things.

Top tips to help you choose the right storage room size

Frequency of access – When choosing what size storage room to use, the first thing to consider is how often are you going to need to access your things. If you are disappearing off to the other side of the world and won’t be needing to get to your things you could stack your things right up to the door. If, however, you are going to need to access your things from time to time, we strongly recommend you leave a small ‘corridor’ down the middle of the storage room so you can access your things in all parts of the room – both front and back and side to side.

Shelving – If you are going to need regular access to your things and want to be efficient it is a really good idea to fit racking/shelving inside your storage room. These are free-standing units which mean you can easily place your regularly needed or important things in clear view so you can get to them quickly and easily. So make sure you choose a storage room that will allow you to put some racking in a good spot near to the door.

Room location – If you are storing a lot of things or some large bulky items, it is a good idea to ask for a storage room near to the entrance of the storage facility so you don’t have far to take your items when putting them into or taking them out of the storage room.

Doors – If you have bulky items be sure to ask for a storage room that has double doors into it to make it as easy as possible to get your things in and out.

We know it can be difficult to visualise your things in a storage room. Our team are on hand to talk you through what you have to store and can help suggest potential storage room sizes to you. However, you are the only one that truly knows your things and that you have an emperor size bed instead of a queen size bed so it is going to need more room!

The best advice we can give is to go for the largest storage room size you are comfortable paying for that is in the right ball-park for the things you want to store.  By having a bit more room to move about in you will find it a much more efficient process of using the storage room and being able to access ALL your things when you want to and without the need to empty the whole storage room to get to the box right at the back that has the things you suddenly need right now!
